  1. EMAS (1976-1989) Systems programmer for the Edinburgh Multi-Access System. This system provided Edinburgh University users with high quality multi-access services for over 15 years. Designed and implemented numerous system and user service components (EMAS Mail was widely implemented elsewhere in the early 1980s).

  2. X.400 (1988-1999) Project Editor for many X.400 standards, involving participation in ISO/CCITT/ITU-T international standards meetings. Appointed Principal UK Expert for Message Handling (1993).

  3. Employed as consultant by a variety of organizations (including COSINE, Microsoft, BSI, JNT, and the European Commission) on Message Handling, and X.500 Directory issues (1988 - 1996). Key reports have been published by the commissioning organizations.

  4. Other reports, (not all for publication), were produced throughout the 1990s for organisations including JISC, JTAP, IBM, DERA, SAC, SCET, and JNT. About 14 ISO standards, ITU Recommendations, and amendments were published over the same period. In addition, one book (OSI Explained) and other internal reports and samizdats were produced.

  5. EDINA (1999-) Technical consultancy on a variety of issues. Scoping Study for JCAS on DNER authentication and authorisation (2000).
