Break-Out Groups: Summary of Xgrain Functionality Discussion

How each Group Rated Possible Xgrain Features

The purpose of this discussion was to provide a starting point for the development of the cross-search interface.

Each member of the two breakout groups was given a list of features (see below) and the groups were asked to rate each functionality or feature as

  • E = Essential
  • D = Desirable
  • N = Not needed at all

It was pointed out by EDINA staff that not everything deemed desirable would necessarily be delivered in the final form.

Discussants were invited to add other functions that they would like to see.

Discussants were reminded of the Xgrain aims:

  • To provide a cross-search portal which would help to remove barriers to searching of bibliographic databases for inexperienced users, and offer a useful facility for both first cut and in depth searches for experienced users
  • To act as a broker for third party services such as the subject portals, institutional portals etc.
  • In addition to the above, to be developed with the needs of learning and teaching (of information search and retrieval concepts) in mind.
